Gargia Nature Spa

Heat. Cold. Wild water. Repeat. The oldest wellness ritual in the world needs nothing more than fire, cold water, and silence. At Gargia, you have all three — two saunas, a cold plunge pool, an outdoor cold shower, and direct access to the Alta river, with nothing around you but birch forest and Arctic sky.

The Ritual

The hot-cold ritual

The Scandinavian approach to wellness isn't complicated: get hot, get cold, rest, repeat. Science backs what Nordic people have known for centuries — the cycle of heat and cold contrast improves circulation, clears the mind, and leaves you feeling restored in a way a hotel spa never quite manages. At Gargia, you do it the way it was meant to be done: outside, in nature, with real fire.

The Facilities

Four elements, one ritual

Two ways to get hot, two ways to get cold — and the birch forest to rest in between.

Wood-fired sauna at Gargia Nature Spa
Traditional

Wood-fired sauna

Built the traditional way, heated by wood you can smell before you open the door. No thermostat, no timer — just steady, deep heat that builds slowly and stays long. Best experienced in the evening, when the valley goes quiet and the smoke drifts through the birch trees.

Electric sauna at Gargia Nature Spa
On your schedule

Electric sauna

Consistent, controllable heat for those who want the full sauna session on their own schedule. Ready when you are — ideal before an early morning cold plunge or after a long day on snowmobiles.

Cold plunge pool at Gargia Nature Spa
4–8°C year-round

Cold plunge pool

The counterpart to everything above. Step in, breathe through it, stay as long as you can. The shock passes quickly; what follows is the reason people keep coming back. Water temperature held at 4–8°C year-round.

Outdoor cold shower and Alta river access
Unfiltered

Outdoor cold shower & river access

For those who want it unfiltered — a cold outdoor shower between rounds, or direct access to the Alta river for a full immersion when conditions allow. This is the experience you can't replicate anywhere south of the Arctic circle.

When to Go

A different spa in every season

Winter

Under the aurora

The sauna circuit in winter is something else entirely. Step out from the heat into −15°C air, look up, and the northern lights might be out. Towels steam. Stars are sharp. The cold plunge is colder and somehow better for it.

Summer

After a day of hiking

With daylight washing through the birch forest 24/7, take a dip in the river when the sun hasn't set. No darkness, no rush — just relax after a day of hiking and exploring Alta.
