From Postal Route to Arctic Lodge
For more than two centuries, Gargia has been a place of shelter, passage and hospitality on the edge of Finnmarksvidda.
The First Post Route
Finnmark's first land-based postal route was established under Danish rule, connecting Torneå, Karesuando, Lepåpäjärvi, Kautokeino, Gargia and Alta. A postman and two helpers carried mail across harsh mountain conditions.
Lodges as Shelter
Jotka, Mollisjok, Gargia and Ravnastua mountain lodges became essential waypoints along the postal route. The post workers crossed Finnmarksvidda in roughly 30-kilometer stages, resting at the lodges along the way.
Rebuilding Gargia
After the war, the original Gargia Lodge was rebuilt in the 1950s. It remained under state ownership until the 1970s, continuing its role as a trusted shelter near the edge of Finnmarksvidda.
A Place for Everyone
From the 1970s, Gargia Lodge became family-run and opened its doors to travelers, locals and nature lovers who wanted to experience the quiet wilderness at the foot of Finnmarksvidda.
Gargia Joins Æventyr
In 2021, Gargia Lodge joined the Æventyr family. We are proud to carry its long heritage forward with warm beds, local food and meaningful Arctic adventures.
